The directory difficulty mix is 206 easy (5%), 1988 moderate (51%) and 1706 hard or expert (44%). 979 routes (25%) are recorded as loops. Difficulty is calculated from available distance and elevation data; it is not a statement about technical terrain or current conditions.

The most frequent route tags are panoramic viewpoint (1463), mountain (878), waterfall (447), pilgrimage route (299). The highest recorded point in this set is 3,672 m (12,047 ft). This page links 18 regions and 21 featured protected areas with mapped routes. The place-level planning field lists march to june, september to november as the preferred season; check each route and official notices for live access and weather. Variante Faja de las Olas, Camino Natural Anaga-Chasna, Senda Pirenaica - E18 currently lead this page’s directory ranking, which uses route completeness and computed route scores rather than editorial field testing.

Check start and finish for every option. An unknown shape does not mean a loop, and a loop does not establish access to its start.

Know before you go: hiking in Spain

GR, PR and SL: reading the painted marks

The Spanish mountaineering federation (FEDME) and its regional federations register and mark trails in three classes. Long-distance GR routes carry two parallel bars, red over white. PR routes, typically one day or less, are yellow over white, and short SL routes are green over white. Two bars at an angle indicate a change of direction, and an X in the same colours means you have left the route.

Many of the same paths also carry the marks of a natural park or a local council, which can look different. When two systems disagree at a junction, the numbered route on your map and the GPX track decide.

Parks, regions and dogs

Environmental rules are set by the autonomous communities, so leash requirements, camping bans and seasonal closures differ between, for example, Catalonia, Andalusia and the Canary Islands. National and natural parks post their own rules at visitor centres and often require dogs to be leashed throughout. Some high-value areas, such as parts of the Pyrenean valleys in summer, limit vehicle access and run shuttle buses from the valley towns.

Heat first, snow second

From June to September much of the interior and the south is too hot for midday walking; start at dawn, carry more water than usual and treat fountains marked on maps as unreliable until you see them. The best months for the Mediterranean coast, Andalusia and the islands are October to May. The high Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa keep snow on north-facing slopes into June, and summer thunderstorms build over the mountains in the afternoon.
